About Zach Mentz
Born and raised in Fairp
ort, NY – a suburb outside of Rochester. I’ve loved sports for as long as I can remember. I love the competitive nature of sports and I’m extremely competitive myself, so it’s no wonder why sports and I tend to “click.”
My first passion in life was baseball. I’ve been playing baseball since I was five years old and still do to this day. I love basketball as well. Don’t ask why, because frankly I don’t know how or why. I’ve never played organized basketball, besides 3 vs 3 or 5 vs 5 pickup games with my friends at the local recreation center. For some reason though, I just love basketball. I also played football from 7th – 10th grade and wrestled for two years as well. Don’t mention the wrestling part to Andrew. When we were on JV together in 9th grade, he beat me at the Counties Tournament in the semi-finals. I’m still bitter…but not really. Anyways, I signed up for Journalism class as an elective class going into the 10th grade. I figured it was something I might be interested in, but to be honest, I had no big expectations of it leading anywhere. I thought it would improve my writing at the very least. Fast forward three years and who would have guessed Journalism would end up being one of my passions?
I started my own sports blog on BlogSpot in September of 2009, the beginning of my senior year of high school. After spending nine months writing and blogging on BlogSpot, Robert Littal (Founder and CEO of www.BlackSportsOnline.com) recommended I make the switch from BlogSpot to WordPress. I took his advice, and shortly after I invited Andrew to co-administrate Lucky 6 Sports Blog with me on WordPress. As of late though, I recently finished up my senior year at Fairport High School and will be attending John Carroll University this fall, majoring in communications, with the goal of one day becoming a successful sports writer.
I began my online writing in order to improve my writing and begin to generate interest in my work. The more I write = the more I learn = the better my writing is. Makes sense, right? Being a co-administrator of a sports blog seemed like the perfect way to kick start my career in sports journalism. I’m a huge fan of the NBA, MLB, and NFL, so most of my writing will be connected to one of those three leagues. I also follow college football and basketball. I invite you to follow A – Z Sports Blog as Andrew and myself give you, the readers, our own takes on the sports world as we see it. As an 18 year old, I am still learning. Feedback, suggestions, comments etc are always encouraged. Please feel free to voice your opinion. I may be just a teenager, but that’s one thing that ESPN doesn’t have.
