The Untitled Zach Mentz Project

  In February 2011, I began writing my first book – ever. Yes, that’s right. Although I’ve quickly found out that writing a book is more work than most people could imagine, that hasn’t discouraged me from writing the book. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “What’s the book about?”

Let me tell you.

During the winter of 2009-10, I was a senior at Fairport High School – a suburb of Rochester, New York. This book is about the 2009-10 season of Fairport Red Raiders varsity basketball. The only catch? I didn’t play on the team. In fact, I didn’t even try out for the team. I’ve never played organized basketball in my life (unless you consider the local recreation center to be “organized”).

Instead, this book is written from my perspective as the “Number One Fan” of Fairport Basketball, as evidenced by the photo to the left and the numerous photos I have just like it. Not only was I just a big rah-rah supporter of the team, but I was good friends with just about all the players on the team, especially the seven seniors on the roster. The senior players on the team had been waiting for their senior season of Fairport basketball for years, and so had I.

Outside of anyone that was directly connected to the team (coaches, players, stat boys, family etc), I was the person closest to that team and its collective pulse. The story of the 2009-10 Fairport varsity basketball season is a dramatic one, and I’ll include every detail possible into this book as I try to convey to the reader just how special and important that season was not just for me, but the players, coaches and other fans as well.

While there is still plenty of work left to be done on the book, I hope that once the book is finished, you’ll check it out and enjoy it.
